The term murage is used for all forms of support for town defences, not just the permission to take a market surtax.

The list is ordered by country as general reflected in the way the records are held. England, France (including the Channel Islands), Scotland (including Berwick on Tweed) and Wales.

An entry in Bold means a particularly full record, usually of the market rates. Italic refers to 'missing' records, where the primary source is lost or obscure. If the text is cursive this is a grant which may have been used for walls but could have been used for other civic improvements. An entry in monospace type is not for walls but is associated with walling. If the cell backround colour is orange there is some doubt to the record. Red means this proposed grant is rejected. Green means a grant was revoked. Brown means associated evidence.
