A corporation of this borough is recognised so early as the 30th September, 20 Edw. II. (a. D. 1326,) when the King granted to the bailiffs of Karlyngford, &c., a Charter, enrolled in Chancery, (Rot. Pat. 20 Edw. II. a. 24, d.) for levying murage for six years, to enclose the town with a stone wall. (MCI)
