Winchester (Wynton') was given a grant of murage dated 16/3/1339.

Commission to Nicholas Devenysh, mayor of Winchester, Robert Inkepenne, John de Nuttele and Nicholas de Exonia to survey the walls of the city of Winchester and make good defects in them with all speed, and to array the men of the city for its defence by the advice of John de Scures. {Foedera.} By C.

Rex, delectis & fidelibus suis Nicholao Devenysh' majori Wynton', Roberto Inkepenne, Johanni de Nuttele, & Nicholao de Exon', salutem.
Quia pro certo didicimus quod alienigenae hostes nostri, cum galeis & navibus guerrinis, ac hominibus ad arma, & aliis armatis, in multitudine non modicâ, versus regnum nostrum celeriter se trahere proponunt, ad idem regnum nostrum hostiliter invadendum, & mala & facinora quae poterunt, perpetrandum; & quod quamplures defectus in muris civitatis nostrae Wynton' existunt, per quod, nisi defectus hujusmodi citiùs reparentur & emendentur, tam eidem civitati quam partibus adjacentibus, dampnum & periculum non modica, per hujusmodi hostium nostrorum invasiones poterunt, quod absit, evenire.
Nos, salvationi civitatis praedictae contra hujusmodi hostiles invasiones volentes providere, assignavimus vos, conjunctim & divisim, ad muros praedictos supervidend', & ad defectus murorum illorum cum omni celeritate reparari & emendari; necnon ad omnes homines civitatis praedictae, per avisamentum dilecti & fidelis nostri Johannis de Scures, arraiari, & armis competentibus, videlicet, quemlibet eorum juxta quantitatem tenementorum & bonorum suorum muniri, & quemlibet hominum praedictorum ad wardam suam super muros praedictos assignari, ac ad vigilias ibidem, quociens opus fuerit, faciend', compelli & distringi faciend'.
Et ideò vobis mandamus quod circa praemissa intendatis, & ea faciatis & exequamini in formâ praedictâ: damus autem vobis & cuilibet vestrûm plenam, tenore praesentium, potestatem, habitâ consideratione ad praedicta iminentia pericula, omnes illos, quos in hâc parte contraios inveneritis seu rebelles, capiendi & arestandi, & sub salvâ & securâ custodiâ detinendi, quousque aliud indè duxerimus ordinandum:
Damus etiam ballivis, probis hominibus, & toti communitati civitatis praedictae, tenore praesentium, similiter in mandatis, quod vobis & cuilibet vestrûm in praemissis omnibus & singulis pareant & intendant, prout vos vel aliquis vestrûm, eis scire facietis vel faciet, ex parte nostrâ:
Mandavimus insuper praefato Johanni de Scures quod ad hoc unà vobiscum, vel aliquo vestrûm intendat, sicut praedictum est.
