no murage charters are known but in 1361 £500 was paid for walling Carlow when the Exchequer moved there (Ryan, quoting Cox: Chronicles of Ireland; Curtis 282) (Thomas)
Lionel {of Clarence} soon marched against O'Brien of Munster and defeated him; on which occasion, he created many knights among the English of blood and of birth.Not long subsequently, he removed the exchequer to Carlow, and expended a sum of five hundred pounds in walling that town.
