Canterbury was given a grant of murage dated 14/8/1409.

Licence, out of reverence for St. Thomas the Martyr and because they have begun to fortify the city with a strong wall and a ditch, by work of which and other yearly charges they are much impoverished, for the bailiffs and citizens of Canterbury to acquire in mortmain lands to the value of 20l. yearly within the city and in its suburbs and to approve, arrent and build upon all vacant and waste lands and places within the city and hold them to their own use.
