Rye was given a grant of murage dated 24/3/1385.

This was in the form of:-

Wording
Appointment of Edward Dalyngrygge, William Hannaye, clerk, John Warbilton and the person supplying the place of the bailiff of Rye to wall and repair, array and fortify that place, taking masons, carpenters and other workmen therefor, in Kent, except in the fee of the church, as well as stone, timber and carriage, for which the said John is to pay, by survey and control of the said William, with power to imprison contrariants. By C.
