To the T. and barons of the Ex.
On the morrow of Michaelmas {30 Sept. 1373} last, by order of Ralph Cheyne, deputy of Robert Ashton, Jcr, the mayor and bailiffs of Dublin were in the K.'s service at Newcastle McKynegan engaged in its recovery and fortification, so that they could not appear at the Ex. to make their proffer. They made it before the T. at Dublin that day but were nevertheless heavily amerced by William Karlell, second baron. PARDON them this amercement.

In what way was the presence of mayor and bailiffs of Dublin helpful for the fortifications of Newcastle Mackinegan? It may be the fortifications were the royal castle only, rather than the town. Probably what is meant here is the mayor and bailiffs were on military service retaking and garrisoning the castle and town, rather than building work.
