Chichester was given a grant of murage dated 10/5/1385.

Power for the mayor and bailiffs of Chichester, in order to accelerate the works of defence and repair of the walls begun by them and the commonalty at their own expense, to compel all persons, ecclesiastic as well as secular, who have lands or tenements therein, to contribute thereto and to the making of dykes, but this present commission is not to prejudice the said ecclesiastics in future as a precedent, and to demolish, with the assent of the owners, buildings, walls and trees within 100 feet of the walls, and, with the like assent of those in the suburbs, the suburbs themselves where necessary, for the greater safety of the city against attack, arresting and employing labourers within the rape of Chichester therefor and imprisoning the disobedient.
