Northampton was given a grant of murage dated 1/10/1378.

This was in the form of:-

Commission to the mayor and bailiffs of Northampton for the time being to repair the defeats in the walls, turrets, dykes, and other defences of the town with all speed, compelling all of the town to contribute thereto excepting only the privileged, the feeble and the mendicant poor. {Foedera.} By C.

De muris et turellis villae Norhampton' reparandis.
Rex, majori et ballivis villae Norhampton', qui nunc sunt vel pro tempore fuerint, salutem.
Cum villa praedicta muro et turellis de petrâ et calce, ac fossatis latis et profundis, ab antiquo clausa fuerit et firmata:
Ac jam pro certo didicerimus quod, ob defectum reparationis murorum et turellorum ac inundationis fossatorum praedictorum, muri et turelli praedicti ita debiles et ruinosi, ac fossata illa taliter obstructa, existunt, aliqua portâ seu aliâ fortificatione competenti circa eandem villam vix existente, ita quod, si inimici nostri Franciae in regnum nostrum Angliae applicuerint, maximum periculum eidem villâ, si sufficienter firmata et reparata esset, habere posset, evenire formidatur:
Nos igitur ea, quae in nostrum honorem ac salvationem regni, et utilitatem populi nostorum, cedere possit, fieri, ac periculis et dampnis, quae eisdem regno et populo nostris, pro defectu reparationis et fortificationis ejusdem villae verisimiliter evenire posset, quod absit, in hac parte praecavere, volentes, assignavimus vos ad muros, tuellos, portas, fossata et alia praedicta cum omni celeritate debitè reparari, construi, et emendari; ac insuper omnes et singulos villae praedictae ad contribuendum expensis circa reparationem, emendationem seu constructionem omnium et singulorum praemissorum apponendis, quemlibet eorumdem, videlicet, juxta facultates et possessiones suas: viris privilegiatis, ac debilibus et pauperibus, mendicantibus, dumtaxat exceptis, per districtiones et alios vias et modos, quibus melius et celerius poteritis, quacunque excusatione cessante, compelli faciendum.
Et ideò vobis mandamus quod circa praemissa, tanta necessitate causante, cum omni diligentiâ intendatis, et ea faciatis et exequamini in formâ praedictâ:
Damus insuper universis et singulis burgensibus et habitatoribus, et incolis villae praedictae, tenore praesentium, firmiter in mandatis, quod vobis et cuilibet vestrûm in praemissis faciendis et exequendis, intendentes sint, consulentes et auxiliantes quotiens et prout per vos, seu aliquem vestrûm, super hoc ex parte nostrâ fuerint praemuniti.
