For the building anew of a certain bridge of the town of Clane over the water of Anilyffy, and in salvation of many of the K.'s faithful people who, in crossing that bridge from one side to the other before this time, were sunk and daily do sink, GRANT to the provost, bailiffs and community of the town of Clane from the date of the making of these presents for a term of seven years that they may take by the hands of those whom they may wish to depute to this the following customs, viz.:
from each crannock of any kind of grain, malt, flour or salt for sale, 1/2d;
from each crannock of Wodde for sale, 2d;
from each crannock of corkir for sale, 1d;
from 12 crannocks of lime for sale, 1d;
from each crannock of Tanny for sale, 1/2d;

Such that the money derived from this shall be faithfully expended upon the repair of that bridge and not otherwise. And that at the end of each year an account is faithfully rendered before the bishop of Kildare and the sheriff of Kildare. And at the end of that term the said customs shall cease and be removed entirely.

Comments
1389 murage grant for 7 years specifying tolls (CPI 87). Clane is a village close to a bridge over the R. Liffey on the N/S Nass/Trim route and the river is mentioned in the grant. It may be that a pontage grant for rebuilding the bridge has been mistakenly listed as 'murage'. There is no other reference and this is apparently the only document to suggest a borough existed-it is directed to the bailiff. (Thomas)
Rates much higher than previous grants (happenny on 5 fleeces - earlier grant happenny on a dozen fleeces etc.)
This is clearly for a bridge, not defences. However the form is not a toll for those using the bridge, since the bridge didn't exist (it was to be built from the money raised). So a market surtax to raise money.
