Newcastle-upon-Tyne was given a grant of murage dated 30/12/1322.

This was in the form of:-

Wording
Protection until Michaelmas for Benedict de Gryrneston and others sent by the mayor and commonalty of the city of York with four carts to carry stone from the quarry of Thenesdale to the water of Tadecastre to repair the walls of the city.

Granted by Edward II. (Regnal year 15). Granted at York.

Quite how much encouragement to building work this was is questionable but relatively easy to obtain as king was in York.
