Comments
Murage for 5 years from Nat. of B.V.M. next (Vide G.R. Notes 42v.) (Coulson)
Condom in Gascony. Quite the reason for this grant, so well in advance and so far from Hereford or even Westminster, is obscure. Nothing in the grant gives a clue. The previous known grant had expired just over 4 years previous so perhaps an unknown five year grant still in operation but this does not answer why go to France for a none urgent renewal. If no grant in place then why a 5 month delay. Possibly it seemed unlikely the king would return to England before the end of the summer and that some Hereford merchant burgers where in Gascony on business, in which case the direct word of the king seems to be very important.
