Southampton (Suthampton) was given a grant of murage dated 26/5/1321.

Exemplification, at the request of the men of the town of Suthampton, of letters patent (1) dated 26 May, 14 Edward II, granting to the mayor, bailiffs and good men of the town, murage for three years, and (2) dated 21 November, 17 Edward II, granting to them quayage for one year.
Granted by Edward II. (Regnal year 14). Granted at Westminster.

The exemplification of these grants will be to do with the Commission investigating Southampton's murage set up Oct. 11, 1341.
The Chancery seems to have been much less good than the Exchequer in using records to check. The 'exemplifications' are quite likely to have been based on the originals produced rather than on the rolls. In theory, the rolls were an excellent reference medium but evidence that they were used at all thoroughly is absent (Coulson).
