Berwick-upon-Tweed was given a grant of murage dated 9/5/1459.
This was in the form of:-
Grant of money:- £100 p.a. for 6 years from customs and subsidies on wools etc. Starting 9/5/1459 running to 8/5/1465.
Wording
Grant, on the petition of the mayor and burgesses of Berwick upon Tweed shewing the necessity of repairing the walls of the town and castle of Berwick, to the clerk of the works there of 100l. yearly for six years from the customs and subsidies on wools, woolfells and hides shipped in the port of Berwick, to be paid by indentures to be made between the clerk and the collectors thereof, by which and by writs of liberate and allocate the collectors shall be discharges of such payments; the said sum to be spent on such repair by survey of the mayor. By p.s. etc.
Granted by Henry VI. (Regnal year 37). Granted at Westminster. Granted by p.s. etc..
