Grant to the mayor, bailiffs, good men and commonalty of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, on information that divers defects exist in the walling (clausura) of the town and in its bridge, of murage and pontage for five years, William Johanson, Hugh Hankyn, Thomas del Castell, William de Desseburgh, and Robert del Burn to be the collectors.
Granted by Richard II. (Regnal year 8). Granted at Westminster.

It was not comme il faut (an accepted standard) for a closed town to have defeats in its boundary; no Scots or French danger is asserted, nor is the defensive aspect asserted. (Coulson)
