Comments
Always a small town and very much a vicus to Woodstock Palace. The effect of this can only to have been to inflate the cost of goods purchased by the palace, which must have been the major customer of the market at Woodstock (unless the Crown was exempt of such payments). No evidence of any defences but there were park walls, which should have been a royal responsibility, and a town gate, connected to these walls. Was pavage really intended or money for town gate and some of the park walls? See Librate Roll entry for 1254 above.
