Shrewsbury (Salopie) was given a grant of murage dated 26/6/1220.

This was in the form of:-

De claustura ville Salopie. Rex vicecomiti Salopie et omnibus de eodem comitatu, salutem. Sciatis quod concessimus burgensibus nostris Salopie, in auxilium ville Salopie claudende, ad securitatem et tuitionem ejusdem ville simul et partium adjacentiuni quod capiant singulis septimanis semel usque in quatuor annos a festo Sancti Johannis Baptiste, anno regni nostri quarto,
de qualibet caretta sive carro ejusdem comitatus Salopie, ferente res venales in eandem villam Salopie, ibidem vendendas, unum obolum.
Et de qualibet caretta sive carro alterius comitatus ferente res venales in eandem villain ibidem vendendas, unum denariuin.
Et de quolibet summagio rerum venalium ibidem vendendarum, preterquam de summagio busche, unum quadrantem.
Et de quolibet equo, equa, bove et vacca venali illuc ductis ad vendendum, j obolum.
Et de x ovibus, vel capris, vel porcis venalibus illuc ductis ad vendendum, j denarium;
et de v ovibus vel capris vel porcis, j obolum.
Et de qualibet nave veniente in eandem villam Salopie per aquam Sabrine carcata rebus venalibus ibidem vendendis, iiij denarios.
Ita tamen quod occasione illius concessionis nostre de hujusmodi carettis, carris, summagiis, equis, equabus, bobus, vaccis, ovibus, capris, vel porcis, vel nave yeniente in villam Salopie, ferente res venales, nichil capiatur post predictos iiij annos completes, Set, statim completis illis, cadat consuetudo illa, et penitus aboleatur. Et ideo tibi vicecomiti precipimus quod hanc concessionem nostram clamari facias per totam bailliam tuam et firmiter observari usque ad predictum terminum, sicut predictum est.
Teste H. etc. apud Norhamton, xxvi die Junii. Per eundem et Wintoniensem episcopum.

The king to the sheriff of Shropshire, and to all in the same county, greetings. Know that we have granted to our burgesses of Shrewsbury, to aid in the enclosing of the town and for the safety and protection of the neighbouring areas, permission to take once every week for four years {from the feast of St John the Baptist (June 24) in the fourth year of our reign}
From every cart of the county of Shropshire bringing saleable goods for sale in the town, 1/2d.
From every cart of any other county bringing goods for sale, 1d.
From every load of saleable goods except a load of barley, 1/4d.
From every horse, mare, ox and cow brought for sale, 1/2d.
From every ten sheep, goats or pigs brought for sale, 1d.
From every five sheep, goats or pigs, 1/2d.
From every boat coming to Shrewsbury by the river Severn bringing things for sale, 4d.
But after the four years have elapsed, none of these shall be levied. Once the term is complete, the custom shall cease and be completely abolished. We order you, sheriff, to proclaim this grant through out your bailiwick, and to cause it to be observed for its term, as is laid down.
