Winchester was given a grant of murage dated 8/5/1369.

Commission to the mayor and bailiffs of Winchester to compel and distrain all those having lands and rents in that city and the suburbs of the same, and all others who continually stay there and live of their merchandise and take profit, to contribute according to their state and faculties to the repair of the walls of the city; and to take carpenters, masons and other workmen for such repair, arresting and imprisoning any found contrariant or rebellious in the premises.
