Berwick-upon-Tweed (Berwick upon Twede) was given a grant of murage dated 9/5/1459.
This was in the form of:-
Grant of money:- for 6 years of £100 p.a. from subsidies from wools etc. Starting 9/5/1459 running to 8/5/1465.
Wording
To the customers and collectors for the time being of all customs and subsidies upon wool, woolfells and hides shipped in the port of Berwick. Order to pay by indentures to the clerk of the works there 100l. a year for six years; as by a petition presented on behalf of the mayor and burgesses of Berwick upon Twede, the king has learned the great need of repair of the town walls, and has granted to the said clerk for six years next 100l. a year of the customs and subsidies aforesaid, and that the same be spent upon building and repair of the walls by oversight of the mayor and his successors.
