Cardigan (Kardigan) was given a grant of murage dated 26/10/1249.
This was in the form of:-

Grant to the men of Kardigan that in their town there shall be a gild of merchants as in the town of Bristol, and that for three years from All Saints in this year they shall take in their town
on every tun of wine 1d.,
on every last of herrings 4d.,
on every sack of wool 2d.,
on every cartload of merchandise 1d.,
on every horseload 1/2d.,
on every ox or cow sold 1/2d.,
on every horse sold 1d.,
and on every tun of honey 1d.,
for fortifying their town.

Rex omnibus, etc. salutem. Sciatis quod concessimus hominibus nostris de Kardigan quod in villa sua de Kardigan sit Gilda Mercatorum, sicut in villa nostra nostra de Bristoll'; et quod a festo omnium Sanctorum anno etc. xxxiiio in tres annos sequentes possint homines nostri predicti capere in villa sua de Kardigan
de quolibet dolio vini vnum denarium,
et de quolibet lesto allecium quatuor denarios,
et de quolibet sacco lane duos denarios,
et de qualibet carecta mercimoniis onerata vnum denarium,
de quolibet summagio vnum obulum,
de quolibet boue et qualibet vacca uenditis vnum obolum,
de quolibet equo vendito vnum denarium,
et de quolibet dolio mellis vnum denarium,
