NOTTINGHAM 4572 3395. Borough 918 (BF, p. 146). Mint 924-39, 979-1154. 1334 Subsidy £370.50. Vikings wintered in a fortress at Nottingham in 868. Borough captured by K Edw the Elder in 918. Capital of the shire in 1016. Borough in Domesday Book. The great market place lay between the pre-Conquest town and the ‘French borough’ established by 1086 (BF, p. 146; Darby, p. 366).
