South Hayleazes Bastle has been described as a probable Bastle.

There are no visible remains.

Description

Bastle derivative house, possible remodelling of bastle, c11m x 6.6m overall. Side wall 1m thick. First floor door flanked by mullioned windows (Ryder 1984).
When visited in 1984 the central section of the main range of buildings consisted of an old house, 9.05m by 4.6m internally, with side walls 1m thick of rubble with elongate quoins. To the south a patch of rubble near the east end of the wall may have marked the site of a ground floor doorway; there was an upper doorway set a little west of centre, with chamfered jambs, and a two-light mullioned window on each side. The door and eastern window had both lost their lintels. Inside were old transverse beams carrying the first floor, with the scar of a firehood at first floor level against the east gable. The roof had two old principal rafter trusses with collars. In 1990 the old house had been completely rebuilt with the exception of the eastern part of the north wall (and presumably the end gables). South Hayleazes appeared to be a rather superior bastle or bastle derivative house (Ryder 1994-5). (Northumberland HER)
