Llanmelin Wood Lesser Enclosure

In the community of Shirenewton.
In the historic county of Monmouthshire.
Modern authority of Monmouthshire.
Preserved county of Gwent.

OS Map Grid Reference: ST46369283
Latitude 51.63177° Longitude -2.77642°

Llanmelin Wood Lesser Enclosure has been described as a Timber Castle but is rejected as such.

There are earthwork remains.

Description

A roughly oval enclosure, c.52m NE-SW by 32m, banked, ditched and counterscarped, the circuit is not preserved on the SE. The site lies c.235m NE of the Llanmelin Wood enclosures (Nprn301559). Trenching across the defences, in 1930-32, produced IA pottery from the banks, overlain by deposites containing C12 material. (Coflein)

Small enclosure believed to be part of Llanmelin Hillfort but there is not good reason to support this contention. (Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust HER)
Comments

The finds of C12 pottery and the limitations of the online Coflein database mean this site is returned under a search for medieval defences. There is nothing to suggest a medieval fortified site here.

Minor archaeological investigations, such as watching brief reports, and some other 'grey' literature is most likely to be held by H.E.R.s but is often poorly referenced and is unlikely to be recorded here, or elsewhere, but some suggestions can be found here.
The possible site or monument is represented on maps as a point location. This is a guide only. It should be noted that OS grid references defines an area, not a point location. In practice this means the actual center of the site or monument may often, but not always, be to the North East of the point shown.
Locations derived from OS grid references and from latitude longitiude may differ by a small distance.
Further information on mapping and location can be seen at this link.
