In 1348 Feb 6, Radulphus, Baro de Stafford (Ralph, Baron of Stafford) was granted, by Edward III, (In year 22 of his reign) a Royal licence to crenellate Stafford (Stafford Castle, Castlechurch)
Licence for Ralph, baron of Stafford, to crenellate his dwelling-places of Stafford and Madlee and make castles of them. By p.s. (CPR)

Radulphus, Baro de Stafford ... mansum ... Madlee. (Turner and Parker)

the King granted for himself and heirs to Ralph Baron of Stafford licence to fortify and crenellate his "manses" of Stafford and Madlee with a wall of a stone and lime, and to make castles thereof, and hold those "manses" so fortified and crenellated and made into castles to himself and his heirs for ever. Granted at Westminster. Grant by privy seal.

Joint licence with Madley. The contract with the mason, John Bercester, to build the 'manse' was made on 13 Jan 1348 before this grant of the licence to crenellate (Mazzinghi p. 81).

Care should also be taken to avoid giving modern meaning to the medieval use of certain stock words and terms. Licentia is best translated as 'freedom to' not 'permission'.)

Ralph Stafford (1301-1372), soldier and magnate. Had severed successfully in France and won much booty. Also seneschal of Gascony and held other royal appointments. Was made Earl of Stafford in 1351.
