There is associated evidence for murage, dated c. 1298-1305, concerning Norwich (a complaint by Abbot of St Benet of Hulme (Holme)).

Wording
Petitioners: Abbot of St Benet of Hulme (Holme).
Addressees: King.
Places mentioned: St Benet of Hulme (Holme), Norfolk; Heigham, Norfolk; Norwich, Norfolk.
Other people mentioned: Commons of the town of Norwich.
Nature of request: The abbot requests remedy as the king has granted murage to the town of Norwich so that the commons of the town can raise a bank between Norwich and Heigham which is a nuisance to the abbot's free tenants in Heigham.
Endorsement: He should take action for himself in Chancery.

Comments
The petition is dated to 1298-c. 1305 as the petition almost certainly follows on from one of the grants of murage made to the bailiffs and men of Norwich in 1298 and 1305 (CPR 1292-1301, p.327; CPR 1301-7, p.317). (National Archive note)

How was it a nuisance to the people of Heigham? Impediment of trade? Loss of agricultural land?
