Comments
The mayor, seneschal, and bailiffs of Drogheda, with the collectors there, are called upon to settle the accounts of their receipts and expenditure for murage during the entire time of the present king and his father. They declare their inability to state accounts for the time of Edward I., as his collectors died long since, and have left neither rolls nor responsible representatives. They are unable to account for the murage during the reign of the present king, because from the first arrival of the Scots in Ireland until the death of Edward le Bruys near Dundalk, they were daily occupied with the works of their walls, towers, and enclosure of the town for the defence of themselves and adjacent parts, on which they expended beyond the receipts for their murage upwards of one thousand pounds of their own. They therefore pray to be admitted to make a fine to the king for their discharge, which is accorded to them,
