In 1402 Oct 14, Thomas Tunstall, miles was granted, by Henry IV, (In year 4 of his reign) a Royal licence to crenellate Thorslond (Thurland Castle)
Licence for the king's knight Thomas Tunstall to crenellate his manor of Thorslond, co. Lancaster, and to enclose and impark 1,000 acres of meadow, wood and moor of his soil called 'Fairethwayt,' co. Lancaster. By p.s. (CPR)

Thomas Tunstall, miles ... manerium ... Thorslond, Lanc. (Turner and Parker)

Granted at Westminster. Grant by privy seal.

Original source is;

(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation. Care should also be taken to avoid giving modern meaning to the medieval use of certain stock words and terms. Licentia is best translated as 'freedom to' not 'permission'.)

Significant later sources are;

Sir Thomas Tunstall of Thurland Castle (1358-1415)
Sir Thomas Tunstall of Thurland Castle (1358-1415). "He served, 'armed and attended,' by indenture with Henry V, dated 29 Apr, 1415, as a knight in France, and was at Agincourt, and was rewarded with the honor of Ponthieu... There was an effigy of him in St. Michael's (St. John the Baptist), Tunstall." (Browning; American of Royal Descent).

Llittle biographical detail but probably had military service in Scotland, and possibly France, before this licence and the expression 'king's knight' suggests he was in royal service, but not in a significant position.

More information about licences to crenellate can be found here.
