Comments

King's note reads "For the possiblity that it is older than this, see Mackenzie, quoting from a letter of Brunetto Latini, apparently dating from about 1258. The existing fabric certainly does not suggest a castle of this age, still less the 11th cty. date mentioned in the letter, which in any case appears to be a forgery."

Warin de Lisle (1330-1382), 2nd Lord Lisle. His father Gerard de Lisle was a knight banneret and fought in the French Wars and Warin also did military service in France. Parker does seem to have had some particular difficulty with transcribing the scribal hand for this entry on the roll but this is certainly Warin de Lisle.

Original source is;

(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation. Care should also be taken to avoid giving modern meaning to the medieval use of certain stock words and terms. Licentia is best translated as 'freedom to' not 'permission'.)

Significant later sources are;

Warin de Lisle (1330-1382), 2nd Lord Lisle
Warin de Lisle (1330-1382), 2nd Lord Lisle. His father Gerard de Lisle was a knight banneret and fought in the French Wars and Warin also did military service in France.
John, king of Castile, is John of Gaunt, son of Edward III and about to become (already was?) virtual ruler of England during the minority of Richard II.
