Comments

This site has been incorrectly attributed to East Ham Hall, Essex (including in earlier versions of this listing.) In fact the site appears to be the manor house of Eastham, Worcestershire.

Original source is;

(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation. Care should also be taken to avoid giving modern meaning to the medieval use of certain stock words and terms. Licentia is best translated as 'freedom to' not 'permission'.)

Significant later sources are;

Walter Huwet
Walter Huwet had been appointed keeper of the Channel Isles in 1366 although he lost this appointment in 1373 as he refused to support the costs of defending the islands against the French. Gatehouse unable to get further biographical detail, although a number of entries in the CPR (where several individuals are pardoned at Huwet request) suggest he was an active courtier, but presumably a minor knight who rather over reached his means in getting the appointment as keeper of the Channel Isles, although early revenues from this appointment may have funded the building at Eastham, although nothing now remains of this possible work.

More information about licences to crenellate can be found here.
