Robertus de Holand ... mansum ... Baggeworth, Leycestr. (Turner and Parker)

Comments

The manor had been obtained by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, following a legal case in 1312/13 (although some force may also have been used) and appears to have then been directly passed on to Holland (Thomas's friend and chief advisor) (Maddicott, 1971 p. 454-5)

(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation. Care should also be taken to avoid giving modern meaning to the medieval use of certain stock words and terms. Licentia is best translated as 'freedom to' not 'permission'.)

Significant later sources are;

Holland's linkage with the most powerful noble of his generation, and the scale of his consequent enrichment, made his career in some respects sui generis. In another way, however, it typified one of the main routes to social advancement in the middle ages: through service in the following of a great man. (Maddicott, 2004)
