Johannes de Eyvill ... placeam suam quae vocatur ... La Hode, Ebor. (Turner and Parker)

Granted at Canterbury. Grant by King the justiciary, Giles de Arg[entein] and H. de Borham.

Original source is;

(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation. Care should also be taken to avoid giving modern meaning to the medieval use of certain stock words and terms. Licentia is best translated as 'freedom to' not 'permission'.)

Significant later sources are;

John de Eyvill
John de Eyvill leader of the 'disinherited', part of Simon de Montfort forces. This licence granted shortly after Henry III had been defeated at the Battle of Lewes. The peace of Canterbury, forced on Henry, was signed August 12 and this licence may be part of these provisions. Created Lord Eyvill of Egmanton in 1269.

Given the fame of John de Eyvill surprisingly little biographical detail is available.

More information about licences to crenellate can be found here.
