This is the second edition of 1872 which was re-edited, revised and enlarged by Gunn, in three volumes. As the subtitle suggests this is not an attempt to be a comprehensive architectural or historical account of castles but a collection of folk history, although some documented history is also included. Therefore, the volumes of this book are of more interest to the historian than the archaeologist. However, the books are written in a style which, whilst dated, is readable.
