(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation. Care should also be taken to avoid giving modern meaning to the medieval use of certain stock words and terms. Licentia is best translated as 'freedom to' not 'permission'.)

Significant later sources are;

Montagu , Simon de, first Lord Montagu (1259?–1316)
Simon gave long service to both Edward I and Edward II, in the Welsh and Scottish wars and was governor of the English fleet.

Montagu did not receive many rewards for his services. In 1299 he was given charge of Corfe Castle, jointly with Richard de Bosco, a post he held until 1301. It was later claimed that the hall had suffered damage amounting to 100 marks during his tenure; he was granted permission to pay off his debts to the crown at the rate of £10 a year in 1302... In 1311 Montagu was imprisoned for a time in Windsor; perhaps this was because he had attempted to seize the Isle of Man, an action for which he was pardoned in 1313. (Prestwich)
