Mediaeval military architecture in England

George T. Clark

Journal article covering Clark's view of castles. Interesting because, despite the supposed dethroning of Clark dominance in castle studies in the early C20, much of what he writes remained dogma, in particular the idea that the great towers of castles (keeps) where built as strongholds of last resort (Rather than built for courtly display and functions - very occasionally and circumstantially used as retreats of last resort - most notable at the siege of Rochester in 1215)

Published in The Archaeological Journal (1867) Vol. 24 p. 92-109, 319-39
